While sending money through Venmo to loved ones is quick and easy, the service is not without its drawbacks. One major drawback of the app is its inability to issue refunds.
It's possible that once you send money abroad, you won't be able to get it back under any conditions. Find out about Venmo's refund policy and how to reverse a payment here.
Can a Venmo Payment Be Reversed?
The Help section of Venmo states that once a payment has been sent to an existing account, it cannot be reversed. Since the money is sent to the recipient instantly, Venmo cannot refund it.
This could mean that you're on your own if you accidentally pay the wrong person, send the wrong amount, or make a wrong transfer. For the same reason, Venmo cannot be used to send money to private accounts in exchange for goods or services.
The best way to protect your Venmo account is to use it only to send money to people you know and trust.
Unfortunately, the success of your Venmo refund request will largely depend on the trustworthiness of the recipient of your payment. It is up to the recipient to return your money; Venmo has no control over this. Venmo makes it clear on its help page that it "cannot reverse a payment at the request of the sender." "
You must request that the recipient pay you back the exact amount that you sent them. You can deposit the funds back into your account once you've received them.
However, Venmo has your back in terms of refunds in certain situations. It's possible to contact Venmo support if you accidentally pay the wrong person. Nonetheless, this is not a promise that your money will be returned.
Only in the case of sending funds to a fake Venmo account will your money be returned to you. If this is the case, canceling your payment and recovering your money is a simple process.
In the hypothetical case where you wish to send a Venmo payment to a friend who has not yet created an account, the following would occur: When sending money to a friend who doesn't already have a Venmo account, you can enter their email address or phone number directly into the app. After that, they'll be notified of the payment and can create a Venmo account to get their money.
You have the option to revoke your Venmo payment during the liminal period between initiating the transfer and your friend creating an account.
Launch Venmo and then tap the three horizontal lines button in the app's upper right corner. Select the Payments tab after selecting the Incomplete button.
If your pal hasn't signed up for Venmo yet, their payment will show up here. You can get your money back right away by tapping Take back under the payment.
While Apple Pay Cash is already available as a means of sending money via iMessage, Venmo offers the same functionality for Android users.
If you sent money through iMessage, however, you still have time to cancel your Venmo payment. If the recipient of your payment doesn't claim it within three days, the transaction will be canceled automatically.
You can also manually cancel the payment within the Venmo app. If the recipient hasn't confirmed their acceptance of your payment yet, you can revoke it.
To reverse a payment, follow the same steps as above and click Incomplete > Payments, followed by Take back under the relevant payment.
What happens if you send money through Venmo to the wrong person? Incorrectly spelling your friend's username can result in your funds being sent to an unknown recipient.
However, just because Venmo sends your money to some stranger right away doesn't mean you can't go after it later.
Refund requests should be sent to the user first. Launch the Venmo app and use the bottom buttons to make a payment or a request.
If you made a mistake and paid the wrong person, you can do so here. Enter a brief explanation for the misdirected payment in the provided text box.
Simply type in the sum you inadvertently paid them and click Request.
You can try to nudge them along if they haven't responded after a while. You can do this by selecting the hamburger menu, then Incomplete, then Requests. Click the Remind button under that charge to send them a second reminder.
Unfortunately, the person you inadvertently gave money to has ignored all of your repeated requests that they return the money. Luckily, Venmo might be able to fill the void.
Launch Venmo and tap the three stacked lines icon in the upper right hand corner to contact customer service.
When you click Get help, you'll be presented with two options for contacting Venmo. Send an email to Venmo by clicking the "Submit a Ticket" button, or start a live chat with a support agent by selecting "Contact Us" > "Chat with Us."
You should have the username of the person you accidentally paid, the amount paid, and the date of the payment ready before you reach out.
There is currently no option to refuse payments through Venmo. You can't refuse cash once someone sends it to you. You can avoid this by sending the money back to the person who sent it to you.
The Venmo refund policy is less than ideal. You should only use Venmo to send money to people you know and trust. If you don't, it'll be much harder to get your money back (if that becomes necessary).
The money-transfer app Venmo isn't the only option. You can always use a different app to send money if you don't like Venmo.
