"Experience Unmatched Financial Services with Amarillo National Bank"

Founded in 1892, Amarillo National Bank (ANB) is a private financial institution that offers commercial and personal banking services throughout Texas and is based in Amarillo, Texas. This 100-percent family-owned bank has been owned by the Ware family since 1909 and is renowned for its expansive network of branch locations. In 2019, ANB acquired Lubbock National Bank, increasing its footprint beyond the Texas Panhandle and into the South Plains as well as other parts of the state.

ANB operates 19 branch locations in and around the cities of Amarillo, Borger, and Canyon, as well as six branches in Lubbock under the Lubbock National Bank brand. It also operates under the name Commerce National Bank with seven locations in Bryan, College Station, Fort Worth, and two Austin suburbs.

The bank operates 116 automatic teller machines (ATMs) local to those communities. Its assets amounted to over $5.7 billion at the end of 2019, and it employed 695 people as of August 2016.

ANB's headquarter offices are situated in two high-rise buildings in downtown Amarillo. Amarillo National Bank Plaza One, a 16-story skyscraper, opened in 1971, while the 12-story Amarillo National Bank Plaza Two was completed in 1984.

ANB has a history of innovative initiatives in the banking sector, such as the first drive-up bank window in Texas in 1950 and the state's first automatic teller machine in 1978. The bank also constructed the country’s largest drive-up banking facility in 1978. The machine was situated in the bank's downtown lobby, showcasing the bank's commitment to technological advancement and convenience for its customers.

Amarillo National Bank has established itself as a significant player in the U.S. financial sector, ranking 25th in farm lending as of 2019, with 15% of its loans dedicated to agriculture.[12] It has established itself as the most prominent independent cattle lender in Texas and the most substantial mortgage lender in the Texas Panhandle.[13]

ANB is renowned for its charitable efforts and donations, contributing more than $2 million annually to local organizations. During the festive period, ANB provides each employee the opportunity to contribute $100 to any charity of their choice.[14] The bank also prioritizes the financial education of Texans by investing in programs such as ANB Smart and supporting national initiatives such as Teach Children to Save and Get Smart About Credit from the American Bankers Association.[15]

The bank has acquired the naming rights to the Amarillo National Center, a multipurpose arena that can host over 10,000 spectators, built-in 2000.Amarillo National Center

Background[edit]

The First National Bank of Amarillo, located on 4th Avenue and Polk Street, was formed in 1892, and cattleman Benjamin Taliaferro Ware became vice president in 1895. Mr. Ware bought the bank in 1900, and in 1906 sold his stocks and established the Western Bank and Trust Company. He then bought back the Amarillo bank in 1909 and merged it with Western Bank and Trust, founding Amarillo National Bank, a family-owned business that continues to date.[16]

ANB purchased Borger's Bank in Borger, Texas in 1986.[17] In 2018, ANB proclaimed the acquisition of Lubbock National Bank and Commerce National Bank, which was completed in March 2019.

Ownership[edit]

The Ware family's fourth and fifth generations presently own the bank. In 2018, Richard Ware II, the bank's chairman, declared that two of his triplet sons would succeed him in leadership roles at ANB. Patrick Ware now serves as vice-chairman, while William Ware, former director, is now the President of ANB.[19] The younger Wares have been directors since 2008.[20] ANB retains officer positions within the Ware family.[21] Indubitably, the bank is a family-like institution that has withstood the test of time.
