Today, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) upgraded a critical online tool to make it easier for families to provide up-to-date banking information in order to receive tax refunds and other payments more promptly.

In order to ensure that families are able to receive their monthly Child Tax Credit payment, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) today upgraded a key online tool.
The Child Tax Credit Update Portal, which can be found exclusively on the IRS gov Any changes made by August 2 will be reflected in the August 13 payment as well as the remaining 2021 monthly payments.
On July 15, the IRS will electronically deposit payments to families' bank accounts. Those who don't have a direct deposit setup will get a paper check. Direct Deposit Information Change Procedure
To begin, families should check their tax credit status through the Child Tax Credit Update Portal. The application will also let users know if they are set up for direct deposit of payments if they are qualified to do so.
In that case, the account holder's last four digits of their account number and the bank's full routing number will be displayed. If they don't update their payment information by July 15, all future installments will be deposited into this account.
Then, beginning with the August 13th payment, they have the option of switching the account that is credited. They just need to revise the account's routing number and account number, as well as specify whether the account is a savings or checking account. Keep in mind that each recipient can only have one account number used for direct deposit, as the entire payment must go to one account.
Changing over from a paper check to a direct deposit

The hassle and cost of cashing a check are avoided when you use direct deposit. Further, there is no such thing as a lost, stolen, or undelivered check with direct deposit.
Payoffs to families are completely voluntary.
All future monthly payments can be canceled, even if payments have already begun. They do this by going to the Child Tax Credit Update Portal and clicking the "Unenroll" button there. The remaining portion of the Child Tax Credit for eligible families who make this election will be paid in a lump sum with their 2021 federal income tax returns.
By opting out before August 2, 2021, they will avoid any further payments for the remainder of 2020.

Who Needs to Drop Out
Some families may prefer to wait until the end of the year and get the full credit as a refund when they file their 2021 tax return rather than accept the advance payments. Thankfully, the Child Tax Credit Update Portal makes it easy for these households to do just that.
Any family that no longer qualifies for the Child Tax Credit, or who anticipates that they will not qualify when they file their 2021 tax return, can benefit from using the unenroll feature. For instance, this might occur if:
- In 2021, they will have an income that is too high to be eligible for the credit.
- In 2021, their child or children can be claimed as dependents by someone else (perhaps an ex-spouse or other relative).
- For over half of 2020, their primary residence was located outside of the USA.

Any qualified family with a computer, tablet, or smartphone connected to the internet can use the Child Tax Credit Update Portal. Using it, they can control their Child Tax Credit accounts. When a user's identity must be verified, their account is protected from potential identity theft.
If you cannot use the online tool to opt out, you can call the IRS at the number provided in the outreach letter you received if you do not have access to the internet.
Who is receiving a regular stipend
In general, families who qualify will receive monthly payments if they are:
- Submitted a Federal Tax Return for either 2019 or 2020
- We accessed the IRS database of non-filers. gov by the year 2020 to apply for an EIP.
- I used the IRS's new Non-Filer Sign-up Tool to apply for the Child Tax Credit Advance this year. gov
Any qualifying family that has done any of these things will automatically begin receiving payments.
The IRS typically bases the amount of the advance payment on your expected income tax return for 2020. If the 2018 tax return is unavailable because it has not been filed or processed, the IRS will use the 2019 tax return to arrive at the amount owed.
Advance payments will be made to qualified families via direct deposit or check. Children under the age of 6 will receive up to $300 per month, and children aged 6 through 17 will receive up to $250 per month. Payments in advance of the full credit for the Child Tax Credit will be issued by the IRS on the following dates: July 15, August 13, September 15, October 15, November 15, and December 15.
The first installment of monthly payments due on July 15 will reflect tax returns that have been processed by June 28.
Individuals who owe taxes can expect to receive multiple letters.
Multiple letters concerning the Child Tax Credit will also be sent out to taxpayers. Eligible families who filed a federal income tax return for either 2019 or 2020, or who used the IRS's Non-Filers tool, will receive letters in the coming weeks. Please visit www.gov to apply for an Economic Impact Payment. Payments will begin on July 15th, and letters confirming eligibility, payment amounts, and the start date will be sent out by then. There is no further action required from families who receive these letters. Those families who appeared to be eligible for the advance payments were sent the Advance Child Tax Credit Outreach Letter between the first and middle of June, and the personalized letters are a follow-up to that correspondence.

Furthermore, the credit is returnable in its entirety in 2021. As a result, families that qualify can receive it even if they have no federal income tax liability. Prior to 2018, the maximum refundable amount per child was $1,400.
